As we reach the final day of September, it is important to recognize that this month has carried a special meaning in healthcare: Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children in the United States. Each year, thousands of families face a diagnosis that changes their lives instantly. While survival rates have improved significantly over the years, continued progress depends on research, early detection, advanced treatments, and strong support systems.
The gold ribbon serves as the symbol of this awareness month. Just as gold is a precious metal, it represents the preciousness of every child and the importance of dedicating resources toward their health and healing.
Throughout September, medical professionals, advocacy groups, and communities have worked together to increase awareness about childhood cancers, highlight the importance of ongoing research, and provide education on how families and caregivers can find support. However, awareness should not end with the month of September.
As healthcare providers, we encourage everyone to continue learning, supporting, and advocating for children with cancer and their families. By staying informed, contributing to organizations that fund research, and spreading awareness, we all play a role in advancing care and improving outcomes.
Today, as September comes to a close, let us remember that the mission to fight childhood cancer continues every day of the year.
Why can’t I just take a pill instead of injections? Some GLP-1 medications do come in pill form, but when swallowed, much of the medicine is broken down in the stomach and liver. This means the pill versions are only strong enough to match the lowest doses of the injectable medications, not the doses needed for real weight loss. Do oral GLP-1s work for weight loss? They can help slightly with appetite, but they are not strong enough for significant or long-term weight loss. There is currently no oral version that works like the full-dose weight-loss injections.
