Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are often called the ‘great mimics’ because their symptoms can resemble so many other conditions. For many patients, this means years of uncertainty, misdiagnoses, and unanswered questions.
NET Cancer Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about this often-overlooked disease. It’s a day to educate others, share our stories, and advocate for better understanding, research, and early diagnosis. Together, we can bring hope to those affected by NETs and work towards a future where these cancers are identified and treated promptly.
The zebra is the mascot and international symbol for the neuroendocrine cancer community because of the term “zebra” used in the medical community to refer to rare diseases and conditions. In medical school, students are taught to focus on the most likely possibilities when making a diagnosis, which is why the phrase “When you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras” is used. However, in the cancer world, neuroendocrine tumors are the “zebras” because they are rare, difficult to detect, and often remain undiagnosed for a long time.
