We know how much parents have on their plates these days with school events, summer plans, sports, and simply trying to keep kids healthy and safe. That’s why we wanted to take a moment to talk to you about something important: measles.
You may have seen it on the news, there’s been a growing measles outbreak across the country, and now, it’s been confirmed here in Iowa.
As your local healthcare team, we feel it’s our job to keep you informed and prepared, not alarmed. So here’s what you need to know:
What Is Measles and Why Is It Back?
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, or even being in the same room with someone who’s infected. It was nearly eliminated in the U.S. thanks to vaccines but with declining vaccination rates, it’s made a comeback.
How to Keep Your Family Protected
Check those vaccines.
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is safe, effective, and usually given in two doses, one at 12-15 months, and another at 4-6 years.
Know the early symptoms.
Watch for:
High fever
Runny nose
Red, watery eyes
A rash that starts at the hairline
Small white spots inside the mouth
Keep sick kids home.
If your child isn’t feeling well or shows any signs of illness, it’s best to keep them home and consult your provider. We know it’s not always easy, but it really makes a difference in preventing the spread.
